About Ashley
I'm an artist and sailor based in Newport, Rhode Island. My work combines all my loves: family, boating, charm bracelets, striped shirts, Sunday dinners and happy escapes.
Each collection evolves. I've been a commercial photographer, a fine art photographer, a graphic designer, a marine canvas sewer, an embroiderer, and even a counselor at one point! All of these parts of me come together in each collection of what I call: Coastal Popart.
While some of my work begins with an illustration, I typically compose in camera, so most art starts with an original photograph. From there, I deconstruct the image to just a few detailed lines and dots. Next, I reconstruct the image with graphic design and my color palette that I've been in love with for years. For some art, this is the end of the process and it lives on screens. For other pieces, this is when the art leaves the digital realm and enters our analog world. I turn to canvas, sewing machines, resin, paint, embroidery and colored pencils to finish the pieces.
Most days you'll find me in the studio, whether it's at home in our attic or at my husband's marine canvas shop (I'm split between the two locations), with my little dog Casey-Lou, some bubble water and whatever genre of music speaks to me at the moment (currently yacht rock is on heavy rotation).
Lately I've been working on my new collection: The Unnamed Yacht Club. Opening night was Thursday, May 28th, right here in Newport, RI. I cannot wait to share the lore and art of this world with you!
